Bibou in GQ

Congrats to Pierre and Charlotte Calmels whose charming BYOB Bibou landed on GQ‘s list of the top 10 new restaurants in the country. Alan Richman, who pens the food features for the men’s mag, is from Philly. Here he captures the essence of the 8th Street boite:

Bibou is tiny and crowded and mostly unembellished, but it does have pristine white tablecloths. And in this era of cold, hard-edged bistros, perhaps only the French understand what incalculable warmth and intimacy that evokes.

Did you know we carry Bibou’s heavenly, lightly spiced pumpkin bread? At the restaurant, Pierre embellishes it with squares of foie gras. The time we savored it with clove-scented, lime-spritzed pink plum chutney is etched into our cortex, a deft ballet of flavors that made the very un-French ingredients feel distinctly, improbably Gallic. Fortunately, the bread is just as delicious sans-foie. Follow Bibou on Twitter,  where Charlotte often releases word of last-minute cancellations. Now that this French gem has gotten the GQ treatment, you’ll need every edge you can get. / $5 per loaf

Gift Boxes from Better Together Brownies

Fair-trade chocolate, unrefined sugar and dairy from local cows raised without hormones form the base for dense, cakey B.T. Brownies. Baker Todd Kelly and wife and Kestra started the Havertown-based business a little over a year ago, and their pumpkin, peanut butter, classic chocolate and cookie brownies was on the Green Aisle sweet table from day 1. Today, B.T. dropped by with gorgeous cocoa-brown gift boxes wrapped in tangerine ribbon. Till they sell out, we’re giving away the boxes for free when you buy three or six brownies. A perfect, delicious holiday present.

In Stock: Ric’s Breads

After a brief hiatus, our shelves are yet again bursting with fresh baked goods from Ric’s. Owners Michael (a CIA grad) and Michele Stauffer’s Queen Street bakery in the heart of postcard-cute Lancaster City supply us with loves of nutty, subtly sweet 14-grain whole wheat, pumpernickely cocoa-colored Black Russian and what is quite possibly the world’s most addictive cinnamon bread.

We also carry the English muffins everyone’s been buzzing about. Tall as a Rouge burger but soft as a pillow, Thomas’s these certainy ain’t. Five per bag, available in 14-grain or mined with gem-toned dried fruit. They were baked this morning so get ‘em while they’re still warm.
