It’s Turkey Time!

Green Aisle is now taking pre-orders for Thanksgiving turkeys!

It seems a little early to be thinking about Thanksgiving, but pre-ordering a turkey can take a load of your mind. It gives you more time to plan fun side dishes, like stuffing. And stuffing. And some more stuffing…

Stuuuuufffffiiiiinnnnggggg

Green Aisle is bringing you birds raised by farmer Barb Shelley from Mountain View Poultry in Walnutport, PA. The turkeys are sustainably and humanly raised, meaning no hormones or antibiotics and the birds are free to graze as they like. They’re the same birds as last year so if you’ve had one before you remember how succulent and fresh they were.

Barb!

When ordering, you have three turkey sizes to choose from: 15-20 pounds, 20-25 pounds, 25-30 pounds. Each turkey is $5.99 per pound and your order requires a 50% deposit based on the highest weight in your chosen range. When you come to pick up your turkey, you simply pay off the balance.

Tuuuuuuuurrrrkeeeeyyyyy

There are two pick-up dater options: the Sunday before Thanksgiving (11/20) or the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (11/23). Make sure you pick the day that works best for you.

Turkey pick-ups can be stressful. Fun story – I was actually yelled at by a cop while picking up my mom’s Thanksgiving turkey. So order from Green Aisle, where Adam, Andrew, Mica, or I will be more than happy to help you. We want your turkey getting experience to be as pleasant and easy as possible.

This is actually what it looks like at Whole Foods when you pick up a turkey.

And delicious. Did I mention delicious?

The Rapture’s Coming, Time to Eat: Part 3

I’ve got a half an hour until the rapture begins, so I better get this done quick.

Dinner is hard. I think it would have to be several courses, probably of dishes that I turn into minis. Most are recipes for dishes my mom makes.

Dinner – First: Salad, baby. You may or may not have noticed that I don’t have a lot of veggies listed.  I’m picky about salads. I have to actually like them. So these are the two I want:

Dark greens with blueberries, pecans, feta, and balsamic vinaigrette

A little different, but you get the idea.

Dark greens with strawberries, chevre, walnuts, and balsamic vinaigrette

Again, a little different, but you get it.

Stick that in your bowl and munch it.

The Rapture’s Coming, Time to Eat: Part 2

It’s time for part two, (here’s part one) which covers lunch, snack 3, and snack 4. It’s a little shorter and simpler. My only regret is I’m not better at describing food….

Lunch – The sandwich I made for myself the other day, with one small change. Rather than a kalamata olive roll, a plain ciabatta roll so no flavors are washed out. It has two slices of fresh mozzarella, a teaspoon or two of Severino classic pesto, two thin slices of tomato with the mushy bits pulled out, and some greens. And not watery iceberg lettuce. A dark green lettuce or mesclun mix.

This is the best sandwich I ever made.

The Rapture’s Coming, Time to Eat: Part 1

As you may (or may not) know, the rapture is this coming Saturday, May 21st. While I’m 100% certain that I won’t be raptured (I’m an excellent person – I call my Jewish grandmother once a week, I drink rarely and only until I’m giggly, I think about working out, and I’ve cut back a little on my overindulging), I’ve been thinking about what I would want my last meal to be. I love so many things, but I’ve thought about this a lot, and I think I’ve figured out the key:

The key is to spend an entire day eating small portions of the things you love. That way, you don’t get overstuffed and you have a little of everything. It’s strategic. Moderation may not sound like a wonderful part of the last meal, but spending the whole day eating whatever you liked, from wherever in the world you liked? With no regards to cost, travel, or carbon footprint (because you’re about to be raptured anyway)? Come on. That’s irresistible.

I admit, I contemplated this as a last meal. Wayne Thiebaud's "Cakes"

Plus, the rapture has the balls to happen on my 4-year anniversary. What better way to celebrate than eat and drink and then, oh, I dunno, be judged by a higher power?

It's Judgment Day.

Pies! Pies! Pies! (Breads, Cookies, Cakes and Whoopies too)

We’ve just finished compiling our list of special-order baked goodies for Thanksgiving! Last year, pies, pumpkin eclairs and dinner rolls from Wild Flour Bakery went over really well, so all that’s back on offer, plus treats from Baker E (working out of her newly captained Flying Monkey kitchen in Reading Terminal) and our neighbor, Jessie Prawlucki, pastry maven and co-owner of Fond. Before we get to the goods, here’s the fine print: We need all orders by the Sunday before Thanksgiving (for pick-up Wednesday) and require a 50 % deposit. Now, onto the menu.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Baker E/Flying Monkey Pumpple, Now on Pre-Order

Photo courtesy of the Today Show

We were stoked to see our girl Elizabeth Halen (AKA Baker E, whose whoopie pies you’ve been eating since we opened) represented on the Today Show by her epic Pumpple Cake. E, who’s been busy since taking over Flying Monkey at Reading Terminal in October, creates the two-layer Pumpple by baking a pumpkin pie inside a chocolate cake (first tier), topping it with an apple pie baked inside a vanilla cake (second tier) and frosting the sweet stack in glorious buttercream icing. Currently, you can only get the Pumpple at Flying Monkey, but now you can also pre-order them from Green Aisle for the holiday season. Pumpples are a foot tall and nine inches across. One will feed 40 and runs $75. Just give us three days notice, please, and drop off a deposit if you wouldn’t mind. For more Pumpple visuals, here’s a link to the Today Show video.
